Facts About This Drug [top]

This combination of nystatin and triamcinolone is commonly prescribed by dermatologists (skin doctors) to treat fungal skin infections, such as the yeast infection called candidiasis. However, one of its ingredients, triamcinolone, may actually be dangerous to an infection because drugs in its family can hide the signs of an infection or make it spread. Therefore, this drug product is an irrational combination for treating an infection. Instead, your doctor should prescribe nystatin alone.

If you have a fungal skin infection that is inflamed, itching, or scaly, it may be appropriate to use hydrocortisone in addition to an antifungal ointment such as nystatin for a few days. Each drug should be applied separately in a ratio determined by your doctor.

This drug, sold under the brand name Mycolog II, also has an older form called Mycolog cream. Mycolog cream is a combination of neomycin and gramicidin, and it should not be used either. Neomycin commonly causes skin rashes in 8% of the people who use it.[1] Using neomycin can also make it hard for you to use other drugs in its family (aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as gentamicin and tobramycin) that may be needed later for serious infections.[1]
